2 Gachagua Allies Fight Back as Impeachment Motion Gains Momentum

The impeachment motion against Rigathi Gachagua continued to elicit reactions from political players on Wednesday with two of the Deputy President’s close allies coming out guns blazing warning  that the former may withdraw his support for the Kenya Kwanza government.

Speaking to journalists outside the National Assembly, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu gave the clearest indication that Gachagua’s camp has already prepared for the eventuality that the impeachment motion will be successful.

In case this happens, Nyutu warned that Gachagua and his allies will withdraw support for the ruling administration.

“For us divorcing Rigathi is divorcing the whole mountain,” Nyutu stated.

Senator Nyutu while intimating that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has a hand in the looming impeachment asked the former prime minister to hand Gachagua a political lifeline and whip his MPs into withdrawing support for the motion.

“We have not seen anything that Rigathi has done, that Ruto as DP never did to President Uhuru, Uhuru never tried to impeach him, this is something that we do not take lightly, and we know that without his blessing this motion would never have been tabled,” Senator Nyutu stated.

Separately, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya speaking during an interview with K24 dismissed the charges levelled against Gachagua, claiming most of the allegations as fabricated.

“Even though there are allegations of the DP appearing that he has been a bully, I don’t think he has gone physical to anybody,” Gakuya defended the DP.

The MP further trained his guns on Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah for making insensitive comments against the DP. The Majority Leader had claimed Gachagua is a merciless man who needs to be tamed.

The MP also poked holes into Ichung’wah’s request  to Speaker Wetangula asking him to ensure that all MPs backing the motion are adequately protected through liaising with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

“When you talk about protection, I know you are asking to be protected because you fear Gachagua will hunt you,” he stated.

The MP, a close friend to Gachagua, noted that he has never heard of any instance where Gachagua has bullied anyone as claimed by a section of politicians led by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

“Personally, he (Gachagua) is a good friend and I have not seen any kind of characteristics people talk about. As much as we have the history of Gachagua I have not heard him being a bully beyond levels of control,” the MP attested.

“Maybe the fear could be maybe supporters who can feel aggrieved may take another dimension to revenge.”

Meanwhile, in the coming weeks, all eyes will be firmly cast on DP Gachagua to see what steps he takes next after the motion was tabled on the floor of the house.
