High School Closed Indefinitely After Rampage, 2 Students Arrested

Tharaka Boys High School which is located in Tharaka Nithi County was on Wednesday closed indefinitely after students staged demonstrations.

Reports suggest the protests erupted after the learners refused to sit for their internal exams, insisting on using the remaining time for revision purposes.

However, the school administration insisted on going ahead with the exams as planned, it was during the confrontations that the students resorted to the demonstrations.

While protesting within the school vicinity, the furious learners faulted the administration for failing to heed their call just three weeks before the start of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

As the protests persisted, the school principal immediately convened a parade and announced temporary closure of the institution to avert damage and quell temperatures.

Following the incident, police officers from Nguo Imwe Police Station were deployed to quell the situation that had began getting out of hand

A probe was subsequently launched into the incident, leading to the arrest of two students who were placed in custody for interrogation.

Tharaka Boys adds to the list of schools that have been closed in recent weeks due to unrest by students including those attending tertiary institutions.

Hardly a week ago, St Monica Girls High School in Kitale, Trans-Nzoia County was closed indefinitely after the learners staged demonstrations.

The furious students while protesting, demanded the immediate resignation of the school principal whom they accused of mismanagement.

In the footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the students while going on rampage, destroyed property of unknown value including the school gate.

The students also left messages on the school whiteboard expressing their dissatisfaction with the principal.
