Motorists Forced to Seek Alternative Routes After Students Stage Demonstrations

Transport was on Thursday morning paralysed along the Murang’a-Kenol highway after students from the Murang’a Teachers College staged demonstrations.

The furious learners while protesting, faulted the college administration for poor management and bad governance.

According to the learners, their efforts to engage the school administration on critical issues affecting the institution bore no fruit leaving them with no option other than demonstrating.

During the demonstrations, the students barricaded a section of the ever-busy highway forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

In the footage that has since circulated online, the students were recorded holding twigs as they marched through the Murang’a highway, disrupting traffic flow.

The learners who demanded the immediate dismissal of the school principal vowed to continue protesting until their demands were met.

The latest development comes amidst a series of demonstrations witnessed across the country by university and college students protesting several unresolved matters.

Hardly a week ago, Karatina University which is located in Nyeri County was closed indefinitely after students began protests, disrupting learning activities.

The learners allegedly staged violent protests over alleged exploitative matatu fares and high rent charges by the owners of private hostels. While protesting, the learners blocked the main highway leading to Karatina Town using rocks, causing traffic disruption.

Police officers who were on high alert quickly intervened and dispersed the protesters who had lit borne fires along Karatina Town as the standoff between the students and the area landlords intensified.

Meanwhile, a statement released by the institution directed all the students residing in the school to immediately vacate the premises.

“The First Semester of the 2024/2025 Academic Year activities are suspended effective today Wednesday, 25th September 2024. All students should vacate the University premises with immediate effect latest 3:00 pm,” read part of the report.
