Ex-KTN Journalist Lands Top Job at Bill Gates Owned Media House

Former KTN Health reporter Dr. Mercy Korir has landed a new job at Willow Health Media as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Editor-in-Chief.

The medical practitioner-cum journalist who has built a solid reputation for herself as one of the country’s most polished health reporters revealed her new role through her official LinkedIn handle.

“I’m happy to share that I started a new position as Chief Executive Officer & Editor-in-Chief at Willow Health Media!,” Dr. Mercy Korir posted.

 Willow Health Media is a nonprofit organization in Nairobi, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, that aims to improve health outcomes and literacy through in-depth, accountability-driven reporting on health issues affecting Kenya’s poorest communities​.

“To drive knowledge and awareness of health issues that affect the poorest in Kenya through in-depth, accountability-driven reporting to improve health outcomes and boost health literacy.” reads the media’s website.

In her new role at Willow Health Media, Dr. Korir has been tasked with being the vision bearer of the project.

Dr. Korir is a medical doctor with a bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery and a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, both from the University of Nairobi. In 2023, she graduated with a Masters in Marketing and Finance from the United States International University (USIU). 

She previously practiced as a medical doctor before becoming a full-time journalist. Mercy maintained a weekly TV health news feature show and published on Standard Media’s various publications.

Dr. Mercy Korir was employed by the Standard Media Group between April 2017 and November 2022. She would later join AAR Hospital as a Business Development Manager. Months down the line, she left her job at AAR in May 2024 to focus on parenting. 

Instructively, Dr. Korir has in the past reiterated that she is committed to producing and distributing editorially independent health reporting across different platforms including broadcast and social media.

She boasts of 9 years of experience, four as a practicing medical doctor, five in media and health communications, and two years in resource mobilization. She had previously worked in the counties and at several private hospitals.

The doctor has previously been recognized for her services in health and health communication. In 2020 she was Employee of the Year at the Standard Group.  She also won the Presidential Order of Service (Uzalendo Award) in 2020 for her work as a medical journalist at the height of Covid-19. Mawazo Institute recognized Dr.Korir as one of the women scientists breaking barriers.
