Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has extended orders declaring 13 areas in Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous as the government looks to ensure that security is maintained in the Northern region over the long term.

In a Gazette Notice dated October 4, Kindiki revealed that the order will apply for more 30 days effective October 4, 2024.

“The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, extends the declaration made on September 3, 2024, in respect to parts of Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous areas,” reads part of the notice.

“This notice may, at any time be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Gazette direct,”

Following the directive issued by Kindiki, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued directives declaring that no person in the declared areas should possess any arms. The Inspector General ordered all persons in the mentioned areas wielding any arms to surrender them to the nearest police station during the day.

“All inhabitants of the said areas are ordered, with immediate effect, to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest Police Station, Police Post, Police Camp, and National Government Administration offices during the hours of the day for safe custody”, Kanja directed.

The Inspector General further communicated that the firearms will be returned to their respective owners once the security order for the region is lifted.

This comes after Kindiki in March 2024 ordered people in the affected areas to vacate effective immediately following a surge in gang violence stemming from clashes over mining sites.

“Following a spate of grave security breaches at the Dabel Artisanal Mining Sites within Golbo Division of Marsabit County, the Government has taken measures to arrest the escalation of violence and other criminal activities in the area,” Kindiki ordered.

“Effective 0630 Hours today, 14th March 2024, the Dabel Artisanal Mining Sites described in Gazette Notice No.3032 of even date, have been declared dangerous and disturbed and vacation orders issued,” read Gazette Notice No.3032.
